Please forgive me today. I am shamelessly plugging an event my wife is involved with.

My wife has volunteered for the "Field of Dreams" Telethon Executive Lock-Up for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The MDA is one of those organizations that actually does what they set out to do, help people. Which is a refreshing thought these days.

My wife is asking for people to donate money to help the MDA help others. When I say help I mean HELP. They provide, free of charge, medical support, emotional support, wheelchairs, braces, week long summer camps, and research towards a cure. Did I mention they do this all for free?

I grew up with the support of the MDA. They provided my brother and I wheelchairs, wheelchair repairs, medical clinics, and summer camp. Camp is where other kids with MD related disabilities would go for a week and feel normal. We played sports, swam, rode horses, went boating, got silly, got stupid, made friends, fell in love. All in one week.

The sad part of camp was that you never knew if your friend from last year would return the next. I grew up knowing about death. So many friends I knew for only a few weeks. It is sad, but it is true. MD makes you weak. Simple colds can turn into pneumonia and then that could end up killing a weak child, teenager, or adult.

The best part of camp is that even though I no longer go, so many people in my life are people I met at camp. I met my wife there, her brothers, my friends Ann Marie and Keri were in my wedding as was my best man. I found myself there too.

I had a brother that died because of complications related to MD. I was very young and only know him through pictures. It's weird knowing you had another brother, but don't remember him.

I am asking you to help my wife help this great organization. I might ask you again in the future. I ask because I know there are others coping with this disease that need the help of the MDA.

Thank you for your support.
